Although N95 masks are available in many materials, most masks approved by the World Health Organization or procured/evaluated by them use polypropylene as their main material and filter.

N95 masks are safe to wear in extreme heat provided they are well-made and worn by companies that have been approved by national and international health authorities. Because of the tightness and strength of the polypropylene fibers, they are unlikely to lose any fibers.

N95 masks should not be heated on a stove, placed in a heat source such as a microwave or exposed to extreme heat. It is possible to melt plastics or their derivatives. Because they aren’t exposed to high heats, N95 masks won’t cause any harm.

According to the Competition Bureau of Canada, masks must include information such as fiber composition, seller names, principal business locations, and other approvals. COVID-19 has seen a rise of counterfeit masks whose content lists may not be disclosed. It is not recommended that you purchase N95 masks without the necessary information or with appropriate markings, vendors or to indicate approvals from national health agencies.
